Say a person buys a DVR on eBay. After receiving it, this person suspects the seller did not have the right to sell it to him/her because it is leased equipment. Can he/she return the box to the cable company that leases that particular make/model of box without incurring any criminal penalties?
I spoke with a very rude woman in Direct TV customer service and she told me that it didn’t matter where I got it from and how much I paid; it was theirs. If I terminate my Direct TV contract, I have to send the box back. I understand that I have to pay a service fee to use it with Direct TV and to keep the software updated but how can they claim that the box is theirs if I bought it independently?
